Closet Organization

The time has finally come: I organized the bomb shelter we use as our closet. When I got married, I thought I got rid of a lot of things I no longer wear but I guess I was mistaken. Scott’s told me time and time again that we don’t really share a closet; he just borrows a corner for his things. LOL! You guys, I’m not a pack rat by any stretch of the mind. I just appreciate clothing and shoes. Anywho, I think it’s a good idea to spring clean, if you will.

I’ll probably refer to my Pinterest boards A LOT for a while, so please don’t shoot me. While I have a handful of shoes I haven’t had in rotation for the last three months, I have quite a few clothing items that haven’t seen the light of day since 2011. Something funny to mention is that I’m wearing a shirt dress that I haven’t worn in about four years. The jury is still out on this one, too.

This is my dream closet:

I really wish I would’ve taken a before picture but I was on a roll when my husband and daughter went to sleep. I also have a huge bag of clothing and shoes that I’m splitting between friends and thrift stores. My dresser looked like an accessories boutique threw up on it, as well. The closet was a real mess, you guys. However, I’m happy to show you what it looks like now.

The first thing I did was clear out anything that was on the floor. I had a few pairs of shoes, bags of clothes, and accessories I haven’t worn in ages. I looked through the bags to see if there was anything I wanted to keep and found a few things but discarded everything else.

After the floor was cleared, I moved onto the top of my dresser. Unfortunately, Scott was unable to put anything on it (ie. cologne, hats) because it was completely taken over by my crap. I had envelopes, assorted jewelry, my iPhone box, random cards and such just sitting on it since we’d moved into our apartment. I was embarrassed to even let anyone look in the closet.

I ended up going through what was in my jewelry box and tossing things that may have been tarnished or broken. Then, I separated everything by type. I found this earring/ring holder my mom had given me many moons ago and decided to put it to good use. You can find one similar to it here. Isn’t it adorable?!

I have yet to color code my clothes using the ROY G. BIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet) technique I learned while working in retail; that’ll have to wait. But I’m pretty happy with how productive I was in just an hour. There are also some organizing products I want to get for Scott’s T-shirts, ties, and belts. I’ll probably have to go to the Container Store for those, though. Happy cleaning and organizing!
